I kid you not – a former Sheriff of Nottingham has quit Labour because it is robbing the poor.
Nottingham City Councillor Shuguftah Quddoos had been suspended from the party in March – while she held the civic title of Sheriff – for voting against what she called “devastating” budget cuts.
Announcing her resignation now, she told the Local Democracy Reporting Service she had been inspired by the Poplar Rates Rebellion in London in 1921, where 30 Labour councillors were jailed for refusing a court order to collect higher taxes on the borough’s poorer residents.*

She said cuts in the council’s budget for 2025 were likely to be just as damaging as those in 2024, if not more so – but the people who will be most seriously affected – the poor – are going “completely unheard”.
She said: “If I cannot speak up for them in the way they want me to without being sanctioned for it, I cannot remain in the party.”
It’s a new twist on an old tale.
And even if the Sheriff of Nottingham isn’t actually becoming Robin Hood, the protest against robbing the poor should be a wake-up call for that city’s Labour-run council.
Labour has said it is taking “tough and responsible decisions” to “fix our local authority”. Funny – This Writer thought the decisions should be in order to provide services for residents.
The party said it would not be distracted by “sniping from the sidelines”.
I wonder if that’s what the original Sheriff of Nottingham might have said about Robin Hood, back in the day. How times change!
* This ultimately led to the passing of a bill to better equalise tax burdens between the rich and poor.
