Assisted dying is on the way to being legal
Assisted dying is on the way to being legal after a vote by MPs. Will the first UK Dignitas clinic be at Beachy Head?
I notice that Harold Shipman is trending on the social media and can imagine the comments: “if only he had survived, he would have found his vocation”. Perhaps he should have been in charge of that Beachy Head Dignitas clinic?
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill has passed its first Commons vote by 330 votes to 75 – a majority of 55.
Contrary to the tone of the first two paragraphs of this article, that does not mean terminally ill adults who are expected to die within six months could seek help to end their own life tomorrow.
This is the beginning of months of debate and scrutiny, with the possibility of amendments.
One aspect that This Writer would like to see clarified is an effort to ensure that people are not encouraged to try to end their life, either because they are on sickness or disability benefits – or because they have been refused those benefits.
If they are applying to end their lives after failing in a claim for benefits, then that should automatically trigger an investigation into their circumstances, in my opinion.
It should immediately suggest that the DWP’s decision was wrong, or that the applicant is being pressurised to end their life.
That is just one aspect on which vigilance is required.
