What happened to being 'tough on the CAUSES of crime'?

Labour should be locked up over the party’s plans for prisons.

If you don’t know what Labour is proposing, here’s a visual clue:

The plan is to bypass planning laws by making prisons “sites of national importance”, meaning ministers can grant planning permission without discussing it with anybody. In other words, Keir Starmer wants to curb local democracy by giving all the power to his government. What a tinpot dictator.

In order to drive down reoffending, the plan is to bring together prison governors and local employers to create employment councils to link offenders to training and jobs, thereby reducing the burden on capacity in the long term, and there’s just one problem with it – it won’t work.

The way to drive down reoffending is to examine the societal reasons people commit crimes in the first place and eliminate them. But that would require some work – maybe even diverting one or two focus groups away from trying to work out how to make Starmer look acceptable.

I’ve been looking for a handy phrase to describe these policies, that don’t actually solve problems but are likely to create more – and I think I’ve found one:

This is ‘sticking-plaster politics’.
