Is Morgan McSweeney going to be Keir Starmer’s Dominic Cummings?

What do you think? Is Morgan McSweeney going to be Keir Starmer’s Dominic Cummings?

No sooner do we learn that McSweeney was one of the minds behind all the shenanigans designed to ensure that Labour would not win an election under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership (including, we are led to believe, false accusations of anti-Semitism against party members) …

No sooner do we learn that, than we hear he is now embroiled in a row over whether he or Sue Gray is Starmer’s most important advisor.

Here‘s the Evening Standard:

Recent stories have alleged difficult relations between Sir Keir’s closest aides Ms Gray and director of political strategy, Morgan McSweeney, and suggestions of tensions between the chief of staff and special advisers.

Over the weekend, Sir Keir sought to play down the rumours about Ms Gray, saying: “I’m not going to talk behind her back and I’m not going to talk about individual members of staff, whether it’s Sue Gray or any other member of staff.”

“All I can say about the stories is most of them are wildly wrong.”

Judging by Starmer’s past record, though, we can’t trust a word he says.

If there are tensions, then they are almost certain to be heightened by the revelation that Ms Gray is now better-paid than the prime minister himself, after she requested – and received – and annual salary of £170,000. Starmer gets £166,786.

It’s all a little reminiscent of Boris Johnson’s most special of special advisors, Dominic Cummings. Remember him?

He also had disagreements with advisors to politicians in the government he served – leading at one point to the dismissal of one such advisor and the resignation of then-Chancellor, Sajid Javid. Much more was to follow.

And we are still in the early days of Keir Starmer’s new government.

Who knows what fun McSweeney can have over the next months and years?
