Bristol MP explains Labour’s solution to the sewage crisis

Have a look at the following, in which a Bristol MP explains Labour’s solution to the sewage crisis

A little while ago I wrote a letter to my local MP, Karin Smyth, about the sewage issue following an appeal from 38 Degrees. This afternoon I received her kind reply, which runs [as follows]:

“I support the Water (Special Measures) Bill which the new Labour Government has introduced. It will strengthen regulation to make water company executives criminally liable for severe failure, give Ofwat, the water regulator, new powers to ban the payment of bonuses if environmental standards are not met, boost accountability for water executives through a new code of conduct so customers can summon board members and hold executives to account, introduce new powers to bring automatic and severe fines, and require water companies to install real-time monitors at every sewage outlet with data independently scrutinised by the water regulators.

“The Government has introduced additional measures such as securing agreement from Ofwat that funding for vital infrastructure investment is ringfenced for upgrades benefiting customers and the environment. Unspent investment money will be refunded to customers and will never be allowed to be diverted for bonuses, dividends or salary increases.

“A Government consultation is now underway regarding the reimbursement to which customers will be legally entitled when key standards are not met…”
