Labour conference has choked off protest from the floor – literally

The Labour conference has choked off protest from the floor – literally, dragging away a young man who heckled Chancellor Rachel Reeves over support of polluters and arms sales to Israel… by the throat.

The man, from campaign group Climate Resistance, stood up as colleagues unfurled a banner reading: “Still backing polluters, still arming Israel – we voted for change.”

He said: “We are still selling arms to Israel! I thought we voted for change, Rachel!” And then he was violently dragged away by security personnel.

As he was being rushed out, Reeves responded with a weak, rehearsed line: “This is a changed Labour Party and not a party of protest.”

The incident will have rung warning bells for Labour, for which heckling and protests have become a feature of conferences over the last few years.

It makes claims that Labour is not a party of protest look silly when the protest has simply moved against the party itself.

The BBC has suggested that it will have triggered worry among Keir Starmer’s team ahead of his big speech tomorrow (Tuesday, September 24, 2024).

I’m just wondering what he’ll have thrown over his jacket this time. If he gets away with fistfuls of glitter, he’ll be lucky.
