Another blow for Starmer as this polling expert highlights his ‘weaknesses’

It’s another blow for Starmer as this polling expert highlights his ‘weaknesses’.

Professor Sir John Curtice told Radio 4’s Today programme – which might as well rename itself Today Let’s Backstab the Prime Minister – that Starmer has “never been a popular leader”, which is true. He’s a habitual liar who has undermined trust in himself from the moment he smarmed his way into the Labour leadership.

Sir John went on to say he had identified two weaknesses in Starmer’s behaviour.

He said: “He’s never been very successful at doing what George Bush called the vision thing. What is the Labour Party for, what his government is trying to achieve, what kind of Britain does he want… that lack of narrative is being exposed.”

Starmer will have been hoping that his keynote speech today addresses that weakness.

Sir John added that Starmer has “not always had a strong political antenna, and that’s been exposed in the last week or two”.

He was referring – This Writer thinks – to the scandal around Starmer, his wife, and other Labour ministers taking donations which they have used to buy clothes, while cutting benefits for people who need them, like the winter fuel allowance for pensioners.

Labour spokespeople have been scrabbling to justify themselves but their excuses have come across as nothing more than the kind of self-justification given by narcissists for their behaviour; they honestly don’t understand that it is wrong to rake in perks for themselves while they deliberately act to harm others.

It is doubtful that the Labour leader will mention that particular black spot on his copy book, but Sir John has said that the practical upshot has been to throw doubt on Labour’s chances of winning a second Parliamentary term after this one; he is upsetting too many people.

That is the atmosphere in which he has been preparing for his first speech as prime minister.
