Israel has banned the largest aid organisation for Palestinians

After a vote in its Parliament, Israel has banned the largest aid organisation for Palestinians from operating within its expanded borders, labelling it as “terrorist”.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency – UNRWA – is being told to leave Israel, East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza within 90 days.

The legislation means UNRWA will be unable to bring humanitarian aid for Palestinians into any of those areas in a move that seems intended to worsen widespread shortages of food, water and medicine in Gaza.

Israeli politicians used as their excuse a claim that UNRWA had taken part in Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel; these claims have been investigated and while nine of the 13,000-strong UNRWA workforce were found to have taken part in it, there was no evidence that it was involved as an organisation.

Claims that 450 UNRWA employees were members of militant groups in the Gaza strip were discredited after the Israelis provided no evidence.

Besides falsely claiming that UNRWA supported the October 7 attacks, Israel also falsely claimed that UNRWA had allowed Hamas to build a tunnel system beneath its Gaza headquarters – in fact the tunnels were a cellar beneath the building, and items which the Israelis claimed were terror equipment were in fact solar power converters, kept there to keep them cool.

Those accusations were all made and disproved between February and April. It seems Israeli politicians have decided that enough time has now passed for them to repeat their lies – and use them as the basis for their latest attack on UNRWA.

Foreign ministers of Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea and the UK have all condemned the legislation.

In a joint statement, they said UNRWA

“provides essential and life-saving humanitarian aid and basic services to Palestinian refugees in Gaza, East Jerusalem, the West Bank and throughout the region.

“Without its work, the provision of such assistance and services, including education, health care, and fuel distribution in Gaza and the West Bank would be severely hampered if not impossible, with devastating consequences on an already critical and rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation, particularly in northern Gaza.”

“It is crucial that UNRWA and other UN organisations and agencies be fully able to deliver humanitarian aid and their assistance to those who need it most, fulfilling their mandates effectively.”

As a part of the United Nations, UNRWA is an arm of the organisation that brought the modern state of Israel into being in 1948. The accusation of terrorism against it is the latest example of Israel attacking the organisation that created it.

The UK de-funded UNRWA over Israel’s accusations, attracting claims that this country was responsible for a primary act of genocide in doing so; as This Site stated in February,

it punishes the Palestinian people of Gaza as a whole, and although there is no single crime called “collective punishment”, the crimes that constitute it are recognised by countries including the UK. Therefore, in defunding UNRWA, the UK may be contributing to those crimes.

Logically, in throwing UNRWA out altogether, Israel is wholeheartedly committing those crimes.

More sinister is the possible implication for the International Court of Justice’s ruling that the rights of Palestinians should be protected, which was based in part on information from UNRWA.

So this could be an attempt to discredit the court’s decision.

This is how Israeli politicians hope to win their war – with lies.

And all the time, the terror state continues its genocide of an entire people, in mockery of the memory of all those who died in another genocide that started around 90 years ago.
