Corbynite former Labour MP has quit Starmer’s ‘authoritarian’ party

A Corbynite former Labour MP has quit Starmer’s ‘authoritarian’ party, saying it now exists only to “retain the neoliberal status quo, serve corporate interests and protect the ruling class”.

Beth Winter added that “the Labour Party’s unprecedented persecution and ruthless treatment of its own socialist members, representatives and voters is disgraceful”.

Her words echo what many of us have been saying since Keir Starmer took over as party leader in April 2020.

Ms Winter represented Cynon Valley, in Wales, from 2019 to 2024 and was a supporter of former party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who now sits as an Independent MP.

She lost her Parliamentary seat in the last election after boundary changes meant she had to seek re-selection for a new seat in 2023 – and failed to secure Labour’s endorsement. She subsequently called for a review of the selection process.

She said she had been elected on Labour’s 2019 manifesto and remains committed “to that manifesto’s vision for a fairer, more equal, and greener society ‘for the many, not the few’.

“Sadly, the Labour Party no longer represents that socialist vision and I have, therefore, decided today to cease my membership.”

She said the, now “unrecognisable”, Labour Party’s Budget last week was a “missed opportunity” which resulted in “continued austerity, inequality, poverty, and hardship for millions of people”.

She also criticised the Labour government for not lifting the two child benefit cap and scrapping universal winter fuel payments.

The Labour Party has declined to comment.
