Labour doesn’t care: it seems there’s no plan for social care after all
Labour doesn’t care: it seems there’s no plan for social care after all, despite a promise to create a ‘National Care Service’ being included in that party’s general election manifesto earlier this year.
If there was a plan, you see, we would not be hearing about suggestions of a cross-party Royal Commission – that could take years before offering a plan – or a shorter, government-backed independent review.
These are things that a government does when it has no plan and has put aside no funding.
The BBC’s report says the Department of Health – and Social Care – is keen to overhaul the current adult social care system, but the Treasury doesn’t want to pay out for any measures without clear backing from 10 Downing Street.
In the meantime, the creaking old system that we’ve had for many years, in which people are forced to sell their homes in order to pay for a couple of years’ care before being shunted into a substandard service (according to the BBC’s report), is still crawling along with the aid of Labour’s Minimum Wage rise and a bung of £600 million to local councils.
Apparently prime minister Keir Starmer, Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Chancellor Rachel Reeves are to meet and discuss the issue, sometime over the next 10 days.
Gosh. This Writer’s advice to people in care is: don’t hold your breath waiting for any change for the better. These Labour-In-Name-Only ghouls will probably expect you to pass away – so they don’t have to face up to the consequences of their fake promises.
