Arrest warrants have been issued for Israeli government leaders – to be greeted with howls of outrage. Are there guilty consciences in Israel?

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan KC [pictured], has applied for international arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

He has also sought warrants for Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh and its military chief Mohammed Deif.

Mr Khan has said there are grounds to believe that all of them bear criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity dating back at least to October 7, 2023.

Netanyahu has previously said the prospect of senior Israel figures joining the ICC’s wanted list was “an outrage of historic proportions”.

Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz, who is a political rival of Netanyahu, said on X that the move is “a deep distortion of justice and blatant moral bankruptcy”.

None of the individuals named by Mr Khan are likely to be making trips to The Hague in the near future. Months often pass between the point at which an ICC prosecutor requests an arrest warrant and judges issue it.

Even then, there is no guarantee that the people named on the warrants will surrender.

Considering the Israelis’ response, it seems Netanyahu and Gallant are likely to make themselves fugitives from justice. That is not the response of men with nothing to hide. Are they displaying guilty consciences in Israel?
