Will weakling May stuff the Lords with new Tory peers to get her way on Brexit?

Last Updated: May 19, 2018By

It’s the Conservative habit.

Whenever the House of Lords rebels on a major issue, rather than even try to put forward a convincing argument, a Tory prime minister will approve the ennoblement of a few more crawlers – ex-ministers who have lost their Commons seats in democratic elections and suchlike.

So not only do these people get to continue involving the high life at the expense of the public – they owe it to the prime minister of the day, and are therefore expected to carry out that person’s demands.

In the case of Brexit, we can only conclude that the Conservative government does not have any convincing arguments in favour of its decisions.

We are, therefore, hurtling headlong into a deeply dangerous situation that cannot be justified by rational argument.

If Mrs May goes ahead with the plan to ennoble – for crying out loud! – Eric Pickles and Peter Lilley, along with others, then she will be acknowledging that she cannot justify her policy.

The only way it can get through Parliament is by the blind obedience of a bunch of yes-people.

If I were advising Mrs May, I’d tell her to find another way.

All this will do is cement her reputation as the weakest modern prime minister.

Theresa May is expected to approve the creation of about 10 Conservative peers and at least one for the Democratic Unionist party, perhaps as early as Friday, in an attempt to improve her position in the House of Lords, which has voted 15 times against her government over Brexit.

The elevations were immediately criticised by the high-profile remain Labour peer Lord Adonis as a desperate attempt by the prime minister to enlist people to help her against in the unelected upper house.

Tories tipped for elevation include former ministers Sir Eric Pickles and Peter Lilley.

Just how is that going to happen? Our national government is democratically elected our foreign governance in Brussels is an unelected committee of failed politicians .

Wrong. We’ve been over this time and again, Barry. The government in Brussels IS democratically elected.

That isn’t what she’s doing. She’s going for Tory Brexit – the one in which the British people lose all their rights and are forced into wage-slavery to the privileged elite.

I’d tell them A££ to find another way. They all seem to want their own way, which is why we’re still where we are, how long in to the process? I still want to know why not one of around 1,400 people didn’t consider the Irish boarder, when the Referendum Bill was being debated. They have all be derelict in their duties, are far as I am concerned. Theresa May mayn’t be the strongest, or most adept Prime Minister but she’s where Jeremy Corbyn was, when he took over as leader of the Party, trying to steer a ship that is staffed by a crew of errant school children. I can’t say that I approve of her methods but I cannot say that I am happy with the behaviour of any of them in those Houses. They need to stop attacking each other and find solutions, in stead of creating problems.
