May refuses to change immigration rules that allowed the racist Windrush scandal

Loggerheads: Theresa May and Sajid Javid.

This is what happens with prime ministers whose party sees them as only the least-worst choice to lead.

Theresa May thinks she can do anything she likes because she does not realise she has her job only until somebody more capable appears.

In the meantime, her best course of action is not to cause upset – especially against someone like Sajid Javid, the Home Secretary she promoted despite her own distaste for him.

Mr Javid, the UK’s first-ever black/minority ethnic (BAME) Home Secretary, wants to change the law after the Conservative Party was found to have been behaving in racist manner, treating the so-called Windrush generation as if they were illegal immigrants.

But Mrs May wants to keep the laws that allowed the racism in place.

Have a little think about that. A BAME Home Secretary wants to end racist government policies but the prime minister who put them in place will not allow it in a direct snub against that, may I remind you, BAME minister.

Asked if she was planning any changes as a result of the Windrush row, she tried to deflect the discussion onto illegal immigration, which had not been mentioned.

She said: “I think what we need to do is to ensure that we are able to deal with those people who are in the UK illegally, but ensuring that people who are in the UK legally do not find themselves, as the Windrush generation did, mistakenly caught up in that.

“That’s why the Home Office is looking to work with those who are of the Windrush generation to make sure they do have, where they need it – many of them do have the documentation already but they don’t get that documentation easily. That’s why we have ensured that offer of British citizenship is open to them.”

What? Asked to try again, she ventured: “We need to ensure that we keep measures in place that enable us to deal with those people who come to the UK illegally.

“What we do need to ensure is that, as we are applying those measures, we don’t see people inadvertently caught up in that who are British and have the legal right to be in the UK.”

In other words, she won’t change a single line of those racist laws.

They were great for creating impressive statistics showing the Conservatives were handling immigration – and who cared if those statistics were fake and innocent people suffered?

She didn’t – but we should.

I have long said that we should judge politicians by their deeds, not their words. Let us hope that Mr Javid practises the same.

I stated at the start of this article that Mrs May’s best course of action is not to cause upset – especially against Mr Javid.

Most especially with a crucial Parliamentary vote pending.

A shambolic minority government of nasty, but inept reactionary politicians propped up by a handful of terrorist sympathisers.
