Former Marine to stand against Johnny Mercer after failure to end veterans’ homelessness
A former Royal Marine is to stand as Labour’s candidate against former Army officer and current Minister for Veterans Affairs, Johnny Mercer, at the next general election – as Mercer himself suggested.
Mercer swore to end veterans’ homelessness in 2023, saying, “Hold me to account.”
But he has failed dramatically, with veterans’ homelessness in fact increasing by 14 per cent.
Here’s Carol Vorderman with some facts:
.@fredthomasuk former Royal Marine, is Labour candidate against @JohnnyMercerUK in GE
Mercer swore he'd END veterans' homelessness in 2023, "hold me to account" he said

If any part of the factual information above is wrong, This Writer would be interested to know.
But it all looks fairly clear to me.

It goes way deeper than a failure to deal with homelessness amongst former forces people. It’s also something that is down to the entire political/media establishment. We take young people and turn them into completely institutionalised order takers to make them “good soldiers”. A huge amount of effort goes into that, but almost no effort goes into turning them back into functional good citizens when they leave the armed forces. That is why there are so many veterans on the streets unable to cope with civilian life. They have been discarded and only their comrades in arms who conveniently died get respected by the society on whose behalf they were made unable to function.
If you have been turned into somebody who can’t make their own decisions without orders how are you to be expected to find a home and a job, or to get any medical treatment you need. It’s hard enough for the rest of us. Retraining veterans to cope with civilian life when they leave the forces should be an integral part of the Defence budget. Not an afterthought tacked on to deal with “problem cases”.
