Rishi Sunak is cutting holes in the UK’s benefit ‘safety net’

Last Updated: April 22, 2024By Tags: , , , , ,

UK prime minister Rishi Sunak is cutting holes in the UK’s benefit ‘safety net’ – his latest plan is to cut off benefit payments to everybody not taking jobs after 12 months.

How do you think this will affect the chronically ill and disabled, who cannot take jobs at all? His decision will kill them – as decisions by previous Tory ministers (notably Iain Duncan Smith) have killed thousands (if not millions) in the past.

It seems to be an attempt to emulate the harsh US-style benefit system, which cuts off benefits after a certain length of time automatically.

Sunak – whose own job prospects are uncertain after the next general election [see featured image] said “unemployment support should be a safety net, never a choice” as he unveiled his plan to cut holes in that safety net and let the most vulnerable fall through.

This made a nonsense of his insistence that “I’m not prepared to balance the books on the backs of the most vulnerable.”

He also promised to “make sure that hard work is always rewarded” – another nonsense in a Tory UK where the people who work the hardest are paid the least.
