Anti-war activists are concerned about Donald Trump's victory

Is Trump’s call for a period of lawlessness The Purge… or Kristallnacht?

A US Presidential candidate seems to be cribbing his policy from popular culture – or Nazi history, leading me to ask: Is Trump’s call for a period of lawlessness The Purge… or Kristallnacht?

Here’s what he’s saying:

Commentators have leapt forward to claim that the former President – and now Presidential candidate – is calling for The Purge, referring to a movie series in which the United States are apparently crime-free – except during one annual event in which all crime, including murder, is legal for a 12-hour period:

Others have been more observant, perhaps. They reckon Trump was referring to something more sinister – an actual historical event that happened in Nazi Germany:

Before you go leaping over to online reference material, let’s explain that Kristallnacht was a pogrom against Jews, carried out by the Nazi Party’s paramilitary SA and SS organisations, alongside the Hitler Youth and some civilians, across Nazi Germany on the night of November 9-10, 1938. The German authorities watched from the sidelines and did nothing.

Commentators referring to Trump’s speech have suggested that he wants a similar event in the United States, targeting – not Jews, but rather anyone Trump considers to be an enemy.

Who would he target? Poor people, perhaps?
