If abuse of MPs is worsening is it because of them?

If abuse of MPs is worsening is it because of them?

If abuse of MPs is worsening is it because of them? Is it that their own behaviour has not improved?

Kim Leadbeater [pictured], now-MP sister of murdered MP Jo Cox, has come out to the media saying that MPs now face more severe abuse in their dealings with the public than when her sister was killed.

She used her Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill as an example, according to the BBC:

“Sometimes we have lost that balance of disagreeing well and having that debate.

“Then it descends into personal insults, threats, abuse, intimidation – and that’s when I worry.”

She did not mention specific examples of abuse that has happened to her.

Personally, though, I don’t see any reason to doubt that it has happened. But she needs to accept that MPs need to accept some responsibility for people reacting to them in that way.

Think of all the scandals involving MPs that have happened in the nearly-nine years since Ms Cox was murdered. This Site has chronicled as many of them as possible if you need help, but to give you a clue that you probably don’t need, there have been a lot.

Think of the Downing Street parties during lockdown.

Think of MPs taking money to speak in the interests of big businesses.

Think of the prime minister taking ‘freebies’ including clothes and expensive tickets to concerts.

Think of Rachel Reeves and Ed Miliband about-turning on their environmental commitments because their economic policies are not working fast enough for them.

The list goes on and on. And the message is clear: our MPs cannot be trusted at all.

And you know what?

Kim Leadbeater had nothing to say about that, so she is not providing all the information we need to judge her words – and that means she can’t be trusted either.
