Is Labour’s pledge to return more ‘illegal’ migrants racist?

Another day, another story about asylum-seekers. But is Labour’s pledge to return more ‘illegal’ migrants racist?

In fact, This Writer doesn’t think it is. It’s merely a symptom of the restoration of the assessment system for people who have crossed the English Channel in small boats, seeking asylum.

The Tories spent more than a decade allowing the system to fall apart because they wanted to create a “them v us” hysteria around migration to the UK. Now Labour is – at least on the face of it – trying to make it work properly again.

According to the BBC,

Plans include 100 more new intelligence officers to target people smuggling gangs and reopening immigration removal centres in Hampshire and Oxfordshire, adding 290 beds.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said she wanted to introduce a “better-controlled” system to replace “the chaos that has blighted the system for far too long”.

The government … says it will redeploy staff to work on returning failed asylum seekers.

This is a welcome change from all the years of Tory guff about foreigners coming here to steal your jobs or soak up millions of pounds of benefits while they wait around for a decision.

Instead we are seeing a return to a system that acknowledges the fact that people try to get into the UK by clandestine means, that seeks to intercept those people, and that then judges whether their reason for coming here is acceptable.

A few months of this and the whole question of ‘illegal’ migration may drop off the political news agenda altogether. Won’t that be a refreshing change?
