Red Wall Labour MPs want the party to be more like Reform UK

The so-called Red Wall Labour MPs want the party to be more like Reform UK because they are afraid they will lose their Parliamentary seats otherwise.

The 40-member-strong Red Wall group, which represents seats in the North of England and the Midlands, was responding to polls showing that Reform is now one point ahead of Labour in opinion polls.

Members seem to think the answer is a lurch into far-right politics, with a media blitz on how Labour’s policies to remove illegal immigrants is working. They seem to think that following the far-right “divide and conquer” trick of demonising a group of people and hounding them as “the enemy” is somehow going to improve their fortunes.

The group as a whole also wants to see some investment in northern England – which is reasonable, since almost all of the investment plans suggested by Keir Starmer’s front bench are based in the southeast of England.

And group convenor Jo White (Bassetlaw) has also called for the introduction of ID cards – a policy that right-wing Labour members have supported since Tony Blair was prime minister.

The Red Wall group is working with Labour Together, the organisation of traitors who backstabbed Jeremy Corbyn in order to make Keir Starmer party leader. Starmer may therefore be seen as a puppet of this organisation, and it is probably for this reason that the Red Wallers have approached it.

The BBC’s article on this states that Labour Together has done some research which shows that Reform is considered vulnerable on health policy and the future of the National Health Service, which Nigel Farage is known to want to privatise.

But that doesn’t really help because under Wes Streeting, Labour also wants to bring in far more privatisation than already exists in the NHS. He has just appointed Tom Kibasi, an advocate of privatisation, to help implement a 10-year plan of cuts, closures and privatisation.

Streeting himself is apparently on the record as having said he is happy to let the NHS die altogether if the public do not accept his “reforms”.

So it seems that, in respect of health, Labour is already well on the way to lockstep with Reform UK policy.

The problem here is as the late David Graeber once put it: “Anyone who thinks the way to head off the tide of fascism is by limiting the range of political choices to either fascists or pro-business neoliberal technocrats is dooming us to fascism.”

In July 2024, that is exactly how the range of political choices was limited for the UK’s electorate. We know what happened: 41 per cent of voters – almost half of them – didn’t bother to turn out, having nobody they could realistically support.

And now, at the top of the UK’s political tree, we have three parties that are almost exactly the same: Labour, the Conservatives, and Reform UK. Any differences are mostly cosmetic.

Labour is answering concerns with a very large social media campaign in which accounts claiming to be independent push party propaganda. Perhaps This Site should focus on that for a while.

You would be well-advised to ignore anybody who tries to scapegoat any group of people – and shun the party or parties that try it. Find someone else to support – there are plenty of alternative choices.
