The Shadow Education Secretary, Angela Rayner, said government ministers had missed their teacher recruitment targets for five years in a row [Image: PA].

This is typical Tory policy. They would break our legs and then hand us a sticking plaster, saying, “This’ll make it all better!”

Then, when we don’t get better, they’ll tell us it’s our fault.

So it will be with child literacy. Having taken away so much of teachers’ ability to actually, you know, teach, they’re offering some cash from their back pocket, saying it will sort out all our children’s problems.

And when it doesn’t work, they’ll say the children simply lack intelligence and attempting to educate them is pointless.

Better to send them to work as chimney sweeps or some such. Right, Mrs May?

The Government has been criticised over plans to increase literacy in schools, with opponents claiming new funding to help children read and write pales in comparison to recent school budget cuts.

Labour said an additional £45m investment in boosting child literacy “will do nothing” to reverse £2.7bn of funding cuts it says schools in England have faced since 2015.

It comes as the Department for Education unveiled a series of measures to help primary school children improve their reading and writing skills.
