As London hosts huge pro-Palestine demonstration, war-mongers stir up hate

For Palestine, not for terrorists: an aerial view of the pro-Palestine demonstration in London on October 14, 2023, suggests that many more than just a few thousand people turned up.

Thousands of people have marched in London and other cities across the UK, to show their support for the innocent people of Gaza whose water, food and energy have been cut off by Israel and who are dying under a bombing campaign.

All of these are war crimes under the Geneva Convention but the demonstrations have attracted a wave of hate from right-wing Israel supporters.

Protesters were careful to point out that they were not supporting the Hamas attacks on Israel that took place on October 7 and prompted the massive military response, that may rightly be described as overkill.

Reuters reported:

Asmat Malik, a 29 year-old pharmacist, said people were angry at what they considered the oppression of Palestinians over decades.

“But it doesn’t mean that people condone Hamas in the slightest, because being pro-Palestine doesn’t mean you’re anti-Semitic. I think that’s really important to stress,” she said.

That fairly obvious point seems to have been missed by right-wing Israel supporters who posted chest-beating displays of outrage that anybody would dare to stand up against the genocide of innocent people by the Middle East’s most warlike nation.

What follows is sickening and the people posting it are to be condemned for their attempts to spread hate. You need to know who they are:

Here’s the editor of the Jewish Chronicle, with just one of the responses to his ridiculous claim:

Zac Goldsmith, who was once a candidate to be Mayor of London, attacked the people who could have been his constituents with an apparent claim that he could read their minds. His words are debunked by Aaron Bastani of Novara Media:

How can anybody suggest that a demonstration calling for a militarised (local) superpower to have mercy on innocent people – including more than a million children – is inciting “the eradication of Jews from Israel”?

It is ridiculous nonsense. As is this from Darren Grimes, a presenter at GB News, whose words were also easily countered:

Other respondents challenged Grimes to point out supporters of Hamas in the crowd – perhaps by identifying Hamas flags. They don’t seem to have received a response…

I include this tweet because it makes reference to the UK’s armed forces who freed Jews from the Nazis in World War II – and the answer needs to be understood as well:

On the TV/media round this morning (October 15), Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and his Shadow, David Lammy, were asked whether they support the latest Israeli war crime against Gaza.

The demand by Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a million Gazans to move from the north to the south of the region is known as “forcible transfer“, which is forbidden under Article 49 of the Geneva Convention and defined as a crime against humanity under Article 7 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Here’s James Cleverly’s non-response:

And here’s David Lammy:

The reason they refuse to provide a straight answer is obvious: The UK’s support for Israel is support for war crimes and they know it. They are simply hoping that you won’t realise it.

The only sane response to the demonstrations for Palestine is summed up in the following way by former Labour MP Laura Pidcock:

Seems to me that like Jeremy Corbyn, you are on the right side of reason, compassion and Justice.
Look at Monday’s Front Pages who “report” both the UK and US pleading with Israel not to kill “so many” innocent, unarmed Civilians with their very well equipped Forces.
    This speaks volumes…..

One thing I disagree with is the idea of a Two-State Solution. Israel-Palestine is too small, and dividing it up is going to create two tiny countries with no territorial depth, minimal natural defences, inadequate resources, and enormous, complicated borders to defend. Egypt would conquer them within three weeks.

There needs to be a One-State Solution with dual nationality, like Northern Ireland since the GFA. The British, whose post-colonialism has been every bit as disastrous as their Imperial Age, have tried to partition off India from Pakistan, Northern Cyprus from Cyprus, Northern Ireland from Ireland, and Israel from Palestine. Each time it has led to war and disaster. Rather than creating borders between peoples, they need to find settlements that keep them together, but also do not prioritise one people over the other. Protestants were put above Catholics in Ireland, Greeks above Turks in Cyprus, Hindus above Muslims in India/Pakistan, and Jews above Arabs in Israel-Palestine. Result: Protestants warred with Catholics, Greek Cypriots warred with Turkish Cypriots, Hindus warred with Muslims, and Jews STILL fight Arabs even now.

We in Britain have caused a lot of harm to the world by creating unnecessary divisions. We need to learn to stop it.
