Lineker triggers Israel lobbyists again with call for football team to be excluded

Gary Lineker: has he got news for you!

Gary Lineker has done it again.

It seems the footballer-turned-pundit has been upsetting the Israel lobby once more, and this time they can’t even complain that he’s out of his depth because he was discussing football.

Here’s the gist:

And here are the details:

Gary Lineker has been condemned by MPs and Jewish leaders after retweeting a call for Israel to be banned from international football.

The Match of the Day presenter reposted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, from a pro-Palestinian campaign calling for Israel to be ousted from all global tournaments and games “until it ends its grave violations of international law”.

Tory MPs have now demanded that the BBC intervenes to sanction its highest-paid presenter, as they said they were waiting for “international diplomat and foreign policy expert, Gary Lineker” to condemn Hamas’ atrocities.

The tweet he reposted on Saturday was from the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel.

It included a statement from the Palestinian Football Association which called upon Fifa and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to join all regional and global sporting bodies in sanctioning Israel.

The BBC declined to comment. A source said: “We aren’t going to give a commentary on individuals or individual tweets.”

He’s absolutely right, of course.

If we oppose the genocide being committed by Israel’s government and military, then we should make the Israeli people aware that what’s happening is unacceptable.

Part of that is achieved by refusing to buy Israeli goods and by shunning businesses that invest in Israel.

And part must be in denying Israelis the chance to take part in cultural activities such as sporting tournaments.
