Is this more evidence that Rishi Sunak doesn’t want students to vote?
This Site has already discussed the possibility that Sunak is delaying a general election until the autumn, partly because students move to university/college then and the disruption of their lives means they are less likely to register to vote in their new constituency, let along actually participating in the poll.
Now we learn that, according to The Times, Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer claimed in a leaked email that No 10 blocked armed forces’ veteran IDs from being used as Voter ID because it could “open the floodgates” for students to use their ID as well.

The article states: “The cabinet minister complained that he had been trying to persuade No 10 to let veterans use their IDs at polling stations ‘for months without success’.
“He said he had found out the plans had been blocked by the prime minister’s special advisers because they could ‘open the floodgates’ to allow students to use their cards too.
“In the event, some veterans were turned away from polling stations when they went to vote.”
Speculation about the date of an election has reached fever pitch today (Wednesday, May 22, 2024), with BBC political editor Chris Mason writing that “Since yesterday , I have been seeking a straight answer to whether Rishi Sunak is about to call an election and no straight answer has come. Calls that are normally returned haven’t been.
“It’s not a complete wall of silence, but the only question that matters isn’t being directly addressed.”
All Sunak would say (by the time of writing) was that an election will happen in the second half of the year.
That could be as soon as July 4.
But considering his now-documented antipathy to students… Doesn’t it seem unlikely to you?
