Shadow cabinet to meet on day before Parliament reconvenes. But is it really to plan an election?

The run-down: If Labour’s shadow cabinet is meeting in Salford only to plot a snap election, This Writer will be surprised. But I’ll still be happy.

“Jeremy Corbyn has called a special meeting of the Shadow Cabinet to step up Labour’s preparations for a snap election,” PoliticsHome trumpeted today.

It’s possible, of course.

But it is just as likely that Jeremy Corbyn will be holding the meeting to make sure every member of his shadow government is aware of all the developments that will have taken place over the summer, and will know what will be required of them over the next few weeks.

That could include much more than simply plans to force a snap election.

Apparently the meeting will take place in Salford, near Manchester. This could be to ensure there are no distractions caused by the usual Westminster noise, of course.

It won’t be to make sure nothing is leaked because any fool with a mobile phone can tip off a news-hack, no matter where they are.
