Boris Johnson corruption scandal: can he explain why he gave public cash to his friend?

Buddies: Jennifer Arcuri benefited from her friendship with Boris Johnson when he was London mayor.

How awkward for a prime minister beleaguered by multiple allegations of dishonesty – now he’s facing claims of corruption too.

Boris Johnson is under pressure to explain why he allegedly failed to declare an interest in the allocation of public money to a close friend while he was mayor of London.

The Sunday Times reported that a company run by Jennifer Arcuri, an American technology entrepreneur and friend of Johnson, was given tens of thousands of pounds in public funds and access to overseas trade missions led by Johnson during the prime minister’s time as mayor.

Downing Street has refused to comment on the reports. But Labour is demanding that No 10 provide a full explanation for how the funds and favours were granted to Arcuri.

Snouts in the trough and hands in the till once again, which to quote one of IDS’s favourite phrases “makes my blood boil”. It’s one law for them and another for us. If you’re on the dole and get caught doing a bit of cash-in-hand work in order to survive they will throw the book at you. People at the top fiddle thousands of Pounds and get away with it.
