If Labour canvassers are acting like this, they don’t deserve your vote

Take a look at the clip of Labour canvassers treating voters like dirt, in Cornish Damo’s YouTube video:

Damo provides some excellent commentary and analysis.

Martin Odoni, on The Critique Archives, takes it further.

He refers to the arrogance of canvassers who knock on doors to ask for a conversation about politics and then run away when they realise the other person wants to talk as well. Then they claim they are being harassed, when without allowing householders the right of reply, it is them doing the harassment. And then they tell people walking on their own street to go home.

Then there’s the hypocrisy of saying the Tories will love people who don’t support Starmer’s Labour, when Starmer is copying Tory policies – in particular their support for Israel’s Gaza genocide, which is the reason for the householders’ objection in the clip.

He makes this excellent point:

If they want to retreat into the mechanical non-argument that opposing Starmer is “letting the Tories in,” it is time they and Starmer faced the reality that they are not giving anybody a good enough reason to support him, and so it is the Starmerites themselves who are letting the Tories back in.

And then he goes further.

He says the price of Starmer’s purges is about to be paid, because the experienced Labour canvassers have all gone, having been betrayed by Starmer’s right-wingers or having walked out in disgust at the corruption.

We are left with what he calls the “untalented thuggishness” of the Labour right.

They are so used to getting their way within the Party by just being bullying, threatening and obnoxious, while they have little experience of really talking to the public.

They find when they get answers they were not expecting or do not want to hear e.g. “I will never support the Labour Party so long as it supports the genocide of the Palestinians,” that there will follow a lot of supplementary details, and they do not enjoy sitting through them, because it triggers quiet doubts in themselves… They seem to think they can convince non-supporters to fall into line, not by appealing to them, but by insulting and bullying them.

And he points out that the heart of the canvassers’ problem is they don’t like being asked hard questions:

The canvassers clearly only wanted to talk about the policies of the Labour Party that the Labour Party wishes to discuss. As soon as the conversation switched to probably the single biggest political issue in the country of the last half-year – Britain’s support for Israel’s destruction of Palestine – they turned and ran.

Now, if you claim to represent the Labour Party, but cannot comment on the Party’s position on the issue that is mobilising literally millions of people into open revolt almost every weekend, well, what the hell are you doing there? What is the point of you in such a position if you cannot comment on that?

Finally, he points out the hard fact at the heart of Labour’s canvassing; the most important and disturbing conclusion to be drawn – that shows Keir Starmer’s utter disdain for democracy.

But you’ll have to visit the Critique Archives article to find out what that is!
