Greens have a record number of councillors but still no power

What a great result: the Greens have a record number of councillors but still no power.

Why?

The facts show they went into Thursday’s elections with 738 councillors across 167 councils, and have added 68 (according to the figures so far).

Party leader Carla Denyer seems happy [see featured image]. But they don’t have control of any councils.

In Bristol, the Greens won their greatest increase in councillors – 10. But they didn’t win overall control.

In Bristol, though, the Greens were subjected to a smear campaign in which candidates were accused of anti-Semitism.

Could that have something to do with it?

It seems to This Writer that all the Establishment parties have to do is suggest that there’s something not quite right – un-British – about people in the smaller parties. Their mouthpieces in the right-wing media then amplify it and the public accept it unquestioningly – because that is what they have been conditioned to do.

With Independent candidates, it is even easier because the media can ignore them altogether.

That’s why the important lesson to take from this year’s local elections is this:

Think for yourself.
