A ban on online sales is the first step in a new knife crime crackdown spearheaded by a coalition of groups aiming to tackle the issue, set up by the government.
This Writer was prepared to rubbish the whole idea as another authoritarian attempt to stamp on a problem without understanding it – but there does seem to be some substance to this latest attempt to tackle what is now the most common method of homicide in England and Wales.

So banning online sales of blades is “low-hanging fruit”, as actor Idris Elba, whose Elba Hope Foundation is a member of the coalition, described it.
A ban on zombie-style knives and machetes will come into force on September 24, and will be followed by plans to ban ninja swords, apparently.
His organisation, along with others including police, technology companies and victims’ families, will hold annual meetings, with the aim being to understand why knife crime happens and halve it within the next 10 years.
So it’s not just an attempt to clamp down on knife crime from above – which would almost certainly be doomed to failure.
I don’t think annual meetings are often enough, but this idea certainly seems a step forward.
