Brexit shambles: Latest poll shows clear – and widening – majority for staying in the EU

This is no accident.

The utter failure of the UK’s government to get to grips with the decision to leave the European Union in any meaningful way, other than to attempt to use it as a power grab and a means to extinguish citizens’ human and workers’ rights, has led to a shift in popular support – against leaving the trading bloc.

The satirists are already having a field day with the revelation:

But This Writer is willing to bet you know a Brextremist who has already tried to rubbish the result.

Well, sure – BMG isn’t Survation, but…

A lead that large is usually taken as conclusive.

The British public has swung behind staying in the EU by its largest margin since the referendum, with those backing Remain outstripping Leavers by ten points, a new poll has revealed.

The exclusive survey for The Independent by BMG Research showed 51 per cent now back remaining in the union, while 41 per cent want Brexit.

Once “don’t knows” were encouraged to choose one way or the other, or excluded, the Remain lead rises to 11 points. Either way, it is the biggest gap since the June 2016 vote.

Another, much more honest referendum, is certainly required. Why are Brexiters afraid of the idea?

I would only countenance another referendum if there is proper, unbiased information given to the public about the subject of the question; the E.U. Unless that happens, we will not be voting on the subject of the question but on other things. Parliament should have done its job, properly and secured a proper mechanism when it passed the Referendum Bill. The last referendum was primarily emotional, rather than factual and I fear that all of these polls are the same. Unless there is a substantive difference in the approach, another referendum is pointless. People need to know what it is they are actually voting on; if people still don’t know any more about the E.U., what it is, how it works, what it does, what it is supposed to do (and many M.P.s and campaigners did not) than they did at the time of the last referendum, what is the point of another?
I would like to know on what these polls are based and why peoples opinions have, allegedly, changed, when the E.U. has not and have have yet to leave. If those who were polled also know nothing about the subject of the question, the poll is meaningless. The people need to understand why our membership of the E.U. became an issue in the first place. We need fair, balanced information and it needs to be explained to us why we were never given any say in whether, or not we wanted to be in a the E.U. until now. Remember, the E.U. dd not exist at the time of the previous referendum. If we are to have a further referendum, we must be properly informed.

I agree that the information provided in any future referendum must be fully and properly (and independently) fact-checked. The media were utterly derelict in their duty to do so last time. It isn’t balanced reporting to give two sides of an argument, if even one of those sides is a lie!
I don’t think the polls are as emotionally-biased as the referendum campaign, because people have indicated what they will do, based on the factual information that has come out since the vote.
Our membership of the EU became an issue because right-wing Tory backbenchers were unhappy that they couldn’t exploit poor people enough under EU regulations, so they kicked up a stink behind David Cameron until he agreed to call a referendum on the subject, simply in order to (try to) heal the division in his own Parliamentary party.

I just do not understand why the 29 million who did NOT vote to leave are letting the 17 Million who did, drag them roughshod out of the EU. This Brexirt minority are NOT the “British People” they’re only a small fractioin of it and MUST let our representatives (who MUST do the job they’re paids for) have a final decision before the irrevocable happens.

The EU debate has taken over British politics, in reality of course there will be a price to pay for leaving, but what is the price for staying in?

People will ebb and flow with the tide of opinion but what do we really understand about the real debate we are not having about the EU?

The truth is in or out of the EU we have Neo-Liberal governments hell bent on reducing our democratic rights, yes the Tories are deliberately making a mess of the so called negotiations, because they already want it all to collapse so that they can run off to Trump and stitch us up there.

People should start waking up, getting the Tories out of office should be the greatest priority, the EU is just sidetracking the real issues. Europe is not our saviour, but part of the problem, their agenda is exactly the same as the vile Tories, The Germans are privatising their motorways, the Neo-Liberal agenda rolls on as we speak, start focusing on the real issues not some pie in the sky dream that we are being protected by Europe, because we just are not.

Look at our trade deficits, look at how they treated Greece, look at how money enters the economy. We have a sovereign currency, we can have a sovereign government that works for people and not large corporations like in Europe. We can shape our futures, providing we get rid of the Tories, that won’t happen if we stay in NEO-LIBERAL Europe.

This is my problem with this whole debate and the hysteria which now surrounds it; how many people who are so desperate for us to stay a part of the institution that is the European Union know the first thing about it? This is a worry.
I hoped that thought that there would be greater political engagement and a thirst for knowledge about the E.U. but I have seen no evidence of this thus, I find it disturbing that people are so willing to either change their minds about a voting decision which has yet to be realised, or follow the crowd in the same direction. I wouldn’t mind if the information that was lacking during the referendum campaign were plastered on every wall, broadcast from every radio, on every news programme and newspaper but it is not. How can people, again, be so willing to base their decisions on things about which they know nothing? Why is nobody (especially in Parliament) screaming for this?

Now that we know powerful people were arguing for Brexit because they wanted more power for themselves, rather than because they believe the EU is bad for the people, it all becomes much easier to understand.

“Our membership of the EU became an issue because right-wing Tory backbenchers were unhappy that they couldn’t exploit poor people enough under EU regulations, so they kicked up a stink behind David Cameron until he agreed to call a referendum on the subject, simply in order to (try to) heal the division in his own Parliamentary party.”
I contend that this is not the only reason; many people have been unhappy with what became the E.U., that we never had any say in it, that way that it is run, that fact that it doesn’t do what it says on the tin. This is something that has been brewing in the country for a long time. It is interesting that the majority of those who voted for us to leave the E.U. are the same people who voted for us to join the E.C.
You say that “people have indicated what they will do, based on the factual information that has come out since the vote.” Unless this information is pertinent to the question, I see no reason for a second referendum. We have yet to leave. Anybody with any sense would know that the process would be time-consuming and complex. Things are bound to change during that time but the E.U. has not changed so, based on what new information, exactly, are people basing their decisions? This is what I mean by more emotional than factual. I have heard nothing in the media that regards our actual membership of the E.U. and why we should stay, or leave, only the present consequences of the process of our attempt to extricate ourselves from it. Until that process has been completed, we can have no idea of how things will turn out.

    • Mike Sivier December 23, 2017 at 11:00 pm - Reply

It may not be the only reason, but I would assert that it is the only one that matters. Tories wanted more power over people like us, and they saw Brexit as a way to get it.
As long as people like you continue looking in the other direction, they will be able to carry on working towards that.
The factual information that has come out since the referendum, therefore, is pertinent to the question. We know we will suffer economically because that is already happening. We know our human rights and our rights as workers will be scrapped because moves are already being made towards this. If it doesn’t happen immediately, they’ll keep coming back to it until it does – look at road tolls, which are back on the agenda after being rejected a couple of years ago.
Our membership of the EU helps protect us from exploitation. That is the only reason these powerful Tories want us out of it. All other considerations are immaterial.
The sooner you realise this is not about the merits of the EU at all, the easier it will be to understand what’s really going on and fight it.
It’s Christmas; consider the turkeys. In their place, would you really vote for what happens to them every year? That is the significance of your ‘leave’ vote.
