Independent candidates are standing aside for Jody McIntyre in Birmingham Yardley

Disabled people and anti-genocide voters have Independent candidates to support

Disabled people and anti-genocide voters have Independent candidates to support in the general election.

Where the same person represents both groups, will they be a serious threat to the mainstream parties?

They could be – if they run smart campaigns, and if you pay attention to them.

So here’s Leanne Mohamad. She’s standing against (formerly?) genocide-supporting Labour shadow health secretary Wes Streeting in Ilford North:

And here’s Jody MacIntyre, who’s challenging Labour’s Jess Phillips in Birmingham Yardley, giving his reasons for doing so:

You might have noticed something about Mr McIntyre in that interview clip: he’s disabled. And he’s had abuse because of it. This Writer hopes that Ms Phillips’s Labour supporters aren’t responsible; that would look very bad.

He discusses the reception he has received here:

I think his disability makes Mr McIntyre a stronger candidate than Ms Mohamad – for the moment, at least – because he can appeal to two voter groups. Without support – or at least coverage – from the mainstream media, that extra appeal is vital.

He has a Crowdfunder for his campaign to seek election, meaning you can support him with cash here.

This Writer hopes independent candidates make sure they broaden their appeal so as many voters as possible can become aware of them, and recognise the representation they could secure.
